What is a Reiki session like?
During a Reiki session, the client lies on a massage table, remaining fully clothed. The therapist gently lays her hands on each of the client’s chakras for several minutes, beginning with the crown chakra and moving down the body throughout the session. The energy exchange that takes place is generally very relaxing, and it is not uncommon for clients to fall asleep during a session. Beyond relaxation, the client may also experience heat, pulsing, or other sensations wherever the practitioner places her hands. Occasionally, as blocked energy is freed, a client may experience emotional releases and should not be alarmed by this experience.

Who should consider Reiki?
In general, Reiki is suitable for all beings, including children, the elderly, and even animals! It is unlikely to conflict with medical conditions or prescription drugs, though clients should check with their doctors if they are currently being treated. Those who may benefit most from Reiki will have an awareness of themselves as energy-based beings, and will be mentally and spiritually open to improving their energetic functioning. It is not necessary for a client to be well-practiced in any particular branch of spirituality—all that’s needed is an open mind and a desire to be healed!

What are the limitations of Reiki?
Reiki is not meant to diagnose treat or cure any psychological or physical disease. Clients are encouraged to seek appropriate medical care for any symptoms that are of concern to them. Reiki should be used as a supplemental wellness service, in addition to other conventional and alternative modes. Each client’s results will vary and cannot be guaranteed.

How should clients prepare for a session?
Reiki etiquette is similar to that of massage however clients should wear comfortable clothing to the session as they will be fully-clothed for the extent of the service. Clients should remove all jewelry before the session, as metal can sometimes affect energy fields. During the session, the client should focus on quieting the mind, clearing his mental channels of any particular thoughts. Clients are encouraged to remain silent during the service in order to fully engage in the relaxation experience. Any discomfort or distress, however, should please be communicated to the therapist!

What type of post-session care is suggested?
Immediately after a session, it is likely that the client will feel very relaxed and peaceful. Because of the sedating effect that Reiki can have, clients may consider taking a cab or arranging for other transportation to and from the session; it is suggested that clients refrain from driving or other dangerous activities until they are feeling fully alert! Because Reiki may cause toxins to be released from the cells in the body, clients are encouraged to drink plenty of water in the 24 hours following the session. Clients will ideally feel reenergized, or at least experience some improvements in their energy levels over the ensuing days and weeks. They may also notice improvements in their symptoms. Following their sessions, clients are encouraged to monitor their levels of well-being in order to observe how their Reiki sessions have impacted them.

How often should Reiki be performed?
There is no limit to the benefit of repeated Reiki services; even though a client’s chakras may be cleared after just one session, continued exposure stress and other compromising factors can cause them to become blocked again. Reiki is a great addition to a regular wellness regimen, with sessions being performed once a month, or more if a client desires. Reiki is also a good choice whenever the client is feeling notably run down, stressed, or out of balance. Minimally, it is suggested that clients receive Reiki treatments seasonally.
